Bright Futures Reading Trust

The people behind the pages

Volunteer mentors and the children they read with, one hour a week across East London.

Who we are

Reading changes everything, and it starts with one hour a week

Bright Futures Reading Trust began with a simple idea: a child who struggles to read does not need a miracle, they need a patient adult and a quiet hour. We match 240 volunteer reading mentors with children across 18 primary schools in Tower Hamlets and Hackney, one-to-one, every week of term.

The results speak plainly. Children we work with gain an average of 2.4 years of reading age in a single year of mentoring. But the numbers only tell half the story, the rest is in the moment a child reads a sentence aloud for the first time and decides, quietly, that they can do this.

What makes us who we are

Small, consistent, one-to-one. The things we never compromise on.

One child, one mentor

Every child is matched with the same volunteer week after week, because trust is what makes reading aloud feel safe.

Rooted in the borough

We work inside local primary schools in Tower Hamlets and Hackney, never parachuting in and never leaving mid-year.

Patient, not pushy

Our mentors are trained to follow the child's pace, to celebrate small wins and to let progress build quietly.

Books that fit the reader

We help every child find stories that match their level and their interests, so reading stops feeling like a test.
